A Brief History of Freon and Cooling

and why it is important to you

Before there were refrigerators and air conditioning there was ice boxes, thoughtfully laid out homes, and fans. Invented in the early 1930s freon was invented by Charles Franling Kettering of General Motors. This invention would revolutionize the global economy and allow for the invention of other items such as John Gorries’s ice machine in the 1948 and modern air conditioning by Willis Carrier in the1930s. Although the concept of evaporative cooling techniques was not a new theory it had not been honed into accessible application. Early freon was effective but also toxic, flammable, and dangerous. The formulation of freon began the era of mechanical refrigeration, forever changing the way that we live and do business. Original formulation of freon was Freon-12 or R-12 Dichlorodifluoromethane or CFC. Later we discovered that this version of freon was dangerous to the ozone layer slowly depleting it. As a result, the reformulated of newer freons to become more stable, safer, and efficient.

1990s The Montreal protocol: set a timeline for elimination of production and consumptions of CFCs (Freon-12, R-12, and other classified freon products) to more environmentally friendly and efficient products. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) established 1970s- to address standards and environmental safety and protection. They enforce and regulate environmental protection in the United States.

HCDC R-22 Banned 2010 no new production of R-22. Additionally banned the production and import of new equipment utilizing R-22.

Manufactures could no longer sell pre-charged unit with R-22. Licensed individuals could not install units with R-22

2020 Full ban of production and import completely only recovered recycled or reclaimed from existing systems
